What Langfuse does well
Langfuse is a high-quality open-source LLM observability platform with tracing, evaluation, prompt versioning, and dataset management. It integrates deeply with LangChain, LlamaIndex, and the OpenAI SDK. For product teams iterating on AI quality and debugging model behavior, Langfuse delivers genuine engineering value.
Its open-source model is a significant advantage: self-hostable, customizable, and free to start. For developer-led teams without compliance budgets, Langfuse lets you get observability up and running quickly.
Where CrewCheck pulls ahead
Observability and governance are fundamentally different activities. Langfuse records traces so you can see what happened. CrewCheck intercepts requests so that non-compliant data never reaches the model provider. Under the DPDP Act, simply knowing that an Aadhaar number was forwarded to OpenAI — which Langfuse's traces would show — does not constitute compliance. The violation still occurred.
CrewCheck adds pre-call PII redaction, DPDP consent checks, RBI FREE-AI policy enforcement, and tamper-evident audit logging with chain hashing. The audit record includes not just what was sent, but what was detected, which rule fired, and what was redacted — the evidence chain that a Data Protection Officer needs.
For Indian companies, the difference between observability and governance is also a legal one. Observability tools record what happened; governance tools prove that you took reasonable steps to prevent violations.
Open source vs. governance platform
Langfuse's open-source offering is attractive for early-stage teams. As Indian companies scale and face DPDP enforcement, they will need to add a compliance layer regardless. CrewCheck can be deployed alongside Langfuse — route through CrewCheck for governance, then export events to Langfuse for observability — or used as a standalone platform that covers both.
Choose CrewCheck if…
DPDP compliance and Indian PII redaction are requirements, not nice-to-haves
You need enforcement (prevention) not just observability (detection after the fact)
Regulatory audit trails are needed for BFSI or healthcare customers
You need RBI FREE-AI policy packs out of the box
Choose Langfuse if…
Open-source self-hosted observability is your primary requirement
You need deep LangChain/LlamaIndex tracing and prompt management
Compliance is handled by a separate layer in your stack
