CrewCheck vs OpenAI Moderation API

Compare CrewCheck with OpenAI Moderation API for AI governance and DPDP compliance. See Indian PII detection, audit trail, and RBI policy pack comparisons side-

Quick Verdict

CrewCheck is provider-agnostic and India-focused; OpenAI Moderation is single-provider only.

OpenAI Moderation only works with OpenAI models. CrewCheck governs traffic across all providers with Indian PII detection, DPDP compliance, and multi-provider routing — none of which OpenAI Moderation provides.

What OpenAI Moderation does well

OpenAI's Moderation API provides fast, accurate content safety classification for the most common categories of harmful content (violence, sexual content, hate speech). It is free to use with an OpenAI API key and integrates trivially into OpenAI-based applications.

Where it falls short for Indian companies

OpenAI Moderation is locked to the OpenAI ecosystem. The moment your team routes any traffic to Anthropic, Azure OpenAI, DeepSeek, or a local model, the moderation coverage disappears. For Indian companies that need provider-agnostic governance — especially for data residency reasons — this vendor lock-in is a structural limitation.

More critically, OpenAI Moderation has no Indian PII detection (Aadhaar, PAN, UPI), no DPDP Act policy packs, and produces no regulatory-grade audit trails. It tells you whether content is harmful; it does not tell you whether you are DPDP-compliant.

Choose CrewCheck if…

You use multiple model providers and need consistent governance

DPDP Act compliance and Indian PII redaction are requirements

You need provider-agnostic governance that works regardless of model selection

Choose OpenAI Moderation API if…

You are exclusively using OpenAI models with no plans to switch

Content safety classification (violence, hate) is your only requirement

You need a free, zero-setup content filter for a small-scale application
